On June 10, 2017, we lost the strongest woman we have ever known, our Mother, Alberta (Bert) Wegener. She was born on 4/21/1927 in Kansas City, MO to Albert and Luella Komm. She grew up in the Kansas City, Raytown area and went to Raytown High School graduating in 1945. She worked for TWA and then with Allen printing company as an office worker. She was introduced to Bill Wegener in 1953 by her High School friend, Kathleen Wegener, who was married to Bill’s brother, Ralph. She married Bill Wegener on May 29, 1954. Together, they had three children, Timothy, who died one day after birth, Matthew and Arthur. She had to support her husband and her sons by herself, when Bill came down with Guianne Barre Syndrome in the early 70's. Bill was in the hospital for a year and a half. The boys would do their homework in the hospital waiting rooms when she visited Bill almost every day at the hospital. Bill was at St. Luke's for 8 months, 6 of them in intensive care on a ventilator completely paralyzed. He then spent 8 months at the VA hospital before coming home. Bill was permanently disabled after that and Bert worked at Bill's Auto Supply in Grandview as a Book Keeper to support her family. The family didn't have much growing up but Bert made sure that the family went on a vacation together almost every year. Bill’s brother, Ralph Wegener, would visit the family often and help out with things that needed to be repaired or done around the house. Bert’s brother, Bob Komm, lived in Illinois, but helped out whenever he could as well. As you can imagine, supporting two boys and a disabled husband wasn't easy, but she did a great job doing it sacrificing her own needs over the family’s needs. Her Mother, Luella Komm, lived next door and helped raise Matt and Art growing up. As Luella grew older and started needing more help, being the caregiver she was, Bert also helped take care of her for many years until Luella passed away in 1993. Bob eventually moved into Luella’s house next door and Bert enjoyed having coffee with him nearly every morning and being close to her brother. Bert loved to read and quilt and spoil her grandchildren, Michael and Jessica Wegener, whenever she got a chance. She was also an outstanding cook and would feed anyone that was in her home when it was time to eat. All were welcome, and full, at her table. She loved family get togethers and holidays with family. Matt lived at home with Bert and Bill and when not at work, helped take care of both of them as they grew older. Bert leaves a large void in her family’s lives but we know she's in a much better place with Bill, Timothy and the rest of the family who have passed before her. She is survived by her sons William Matthew Wegener and Arthur Leonard Wegener (Mary Ann), two grand children Michael Wegener and Jessica Wegener, her brother William Robert Komm (Phrana), and their children Karri Hadrick and Karlinda Komm. Visitation will be at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, June 14th at Floral Hill’s Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO with graveside services to follow at Floral Hill’s Cemetery at 10:00 AM.
