Alek Vare, 82, passed away Monday, May 1, 2017 in Greenville, SC.

For 52 years, he was the devoted and loving husband of Marie Vare who pre-deceased him in 2010. He is survived by his daughter Ingrid Martins, and son Allan Jaak Vare with his wife Nancy. His five grandchildren; Aleksandra, Ian and Olin Martins; Adam and Karli Vare; and in his later years, his companion, Hele Evert.

Born in Parnu, Estonia, and having to relocate during WWII, Alek came to the United States in 1949, living in Ohio, New Jersey and South Carolina. His career as a leading rubber chemist lasted over six decades, working at BF Goodrich/Michelin. After retiring from Michelin as a recognized expert in natural and synthetic rubber, Alek forged an equally successful consulting career. In this role he traveled the globe working tirelessly on behalf of the Centrotrade Group and ASTM International as a prominent member of D11 where he was the President and Chairman. His contributions to the standards community are immeasurable. Alek's reach within his chosen industry was far and wide, touching many deeply and lastingly.

In his life, he visited over 60 countries, most recently India and Malaysia. He was a mover and a shaker, playing golf, working in his garden, entertaining friends, and visiting his children and grandchildren in New England.

A memorial service will be 11 am, Friday, May 5, 2017 at The Mackey Mortuary, Greenville, SC, with a reception to follow at Thornblade Country Club.
