Alfred Kelley Harwell, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017.
Mr. Harwell was born on July 28, 1926 in Atlanta, GA, son of the late William Kelley Harwell and Marie Inez Medlin.
Mr. Harwell proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. After his discharge from the military, he graduated from the University of Georgia in 1950, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. He practiced as a CPA until he was eighty-three years old. He had a tremendous sense of humor and loved to play practical jokes on his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling with his loving wife of twenty-one years, Joan Harwell on cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Canada. Some of his hobbies included fishing, hunting and woodworking. He was of the Methodist faith and a proud and active member of Sam Jones United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Camille Harwell; son, Simpson Kelley Harwell; brother, Robert Harwell; son-in-law, Fred Yarber.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Harwell; daughters, Patty (Neal) McEwen and Marie Yarber; son, Lee (Mary Ellen) Harwell; daughter-in-law, Jill Harwell, step-children, Chris (Stephanie) Sklba, Dayvyd (Cindy) Sklba, Robb (Becky) Meredith and COL. Gene (Sam) Meredith; eighteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. The family would also like to give a special thank you to Dr. Esslinger, Dr. Rhodes, Dr. Prempeh and Amedisys Hospice for their loving care of Mr. Harwell.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 17th of February, 2017 at Sam Jones United Methodist Church with Rev. Kevin Lobello and Rev. Nena Jones officiating. Interment will follow at two-thirty in the afternoon at the Georgia National Cemetery with military honors presented.
Friends are cordially invited to a gathering with the family for one hour prior to service time at Sam Jones United Methodist Church.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial donations may be made to Harwell Family Memorial Scholarship Fund at Georgia Highlands College Foundation, 3175 Cedartown Hwy, Rome, GA 30161 or Sam Jones United Methodist Church.
