Amy Calhoun Fletcher Kimsey, 94 - of Albany, Atlanta, Tallahassee and Sylvester - passed away peacefully on the morning of March 8th, 2018.
Known to many as the indomitable "Miss Amy," she was perhaps proudest to be identified by her determined devotion to keeping the memory of her parents - and the heritage of their family name and farm - intact.
She was, in many ways, amongst the last embodiments of a certain generation of Southern women: one with a soft, classic and genteel drawl... who could suddenly still you with a single glance - and then proceed, with mettle in that voice - to adamantly articulate ambition, dictate determination, and give utterance to an utterly unbendable will.
Truly a steel magnolia with roots set deep in a rural family farm, she nonetheless ventured to several big cities to reinvent herself as a career professional and modern girl about town. There was always a side to Amy that appreciated and delighted in the urbane, and she actively enjoyed the people and culture she sought to discover and join.
With an instinctive eye for beauty and a distinctive personal style, Amy was consistently and passionately drawn to the natural and decorative arts - an attraction which expressed itself in her enthusiasm for fashion, paintings, gardening, landscaping, interior design, intricate needlework, handicrafts and architectural reconstruction.
After a successful career in both banking and curating antiques, she eventually did return to the same, simple house her father built over a century ago. Living and working alongside Kenneth Kimsey, her husband and partner of 42 years, her final purpose and realized goal was to retire in, as well as to restore, her legacy of land, property and personal history she had always held most dear.
Amy was the devoted daughter of Amy Sexton Calhoun and Elijah Jackson Calhoun, Sr. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Kenneth Kimsey, and his children, Eva and Paul; by her son, Kenneth Ray Fletcher, and his wife, Nan; by her brother, William Calhoun; by her grandchildren, Scott, Jason, Bonnie Kate, Jarrett, Kelley and Hunter; by her great grandchildren, James, Jackson, Emily, Caroline, Cason, and Cole; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her son, Glen Fletcher; by her daughter, Carol Fletcher Williams; as well as by several of her Calhoun siblings - including E.J., Jr.; Bennie; Eugene; Janie; Mack (Buddy); and Edwin.
Services will be held Tuesday, March 13th, 2018, at Banks Funeral Home, 210 North Main Street, Sylvester, Georgia, 31791. Presiding pastor will be Rev. Josh Bowers.
The family warmly welcomes all friends and guests to attend a visitation hour beginning at noon, followed by the formal funeral service at 1 P.M.
Subsequent internment will be a private service, held at the family cemetery.
