CONCORD-Anna Katherine (Shields) Ward, 100, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at the Havenwood Health Facility in Concord, New Hampshire. Anna, known as Nancy, was born February 13, 1917 to James Leigh and Sarah (Judd) Shields, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the fourth of five children. After graduating from Dormont High School in Pennsylvania, Nancy continued her education at Bucknell University, where she received her bachelor's degree in 1938. She met her future husband while at Bucknell. Nancy married the Rev. Donald C. Ward on July 24, 1941; they had a loving marriage of 48 years before his death in 1989.
In addition to her rich and fulfilling life as a minister's wife, mother, and pre-school teacher, Nancy was active in local, area, and state church-related organizations wherever she lived. Don and Nancy served churches in Groton and West Groton, Massachusetts, Brewer, Maine, and North Weymouth, Massachusetts. After retirement, they lived in Ashburnham, Massachusetts for twelve years before moving to Havenwood in 1987.
Nancy was a wonderful baker who was much in demand for her home-made breads and blueberry pie. She was an avid reader and Scrabble player, an accomplished gardener, and an enthusiastic swimmer. Music was an important part of Nancy's life; she was a talented pianist and organist who shared her music on many occasions. In her later years, she renewed her interest in painting and enjoyed taking classes while at Havenwood. Throughout her long life, she was sustained and enriched by her faith.
She is survived by her beloved children, Elizabeth W. Ross, Sarah G (Sally) Ward, Thomas S. Ward and David L. Ward, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Nancy was predeceased by her husband, parents, and brothers, Dr. Judd Shields, Kelvin Shields, James Shields, and Donald Shields, and by her great-granddaughter Holly.
A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church, 177 N. Main St. Concord, at 2:00 on July 21, with a reception immediately following at Havenwood. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Havenwood Endowment Fund, 33 Christian Avenue, Concord, NH 03301.
