Arlene H. Jensen, 94, of Falls Church, VA, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 20, 2017. She had been a resident of Falls Church City for 66 years, residing the entire time in the home which her loving husband Charles A. Jensen had built for them. They were happily married for 63 years until Charles passed at age 90 in 2007. They had three children: Carol, (deceased), Sandy, and Judy, all of whom attended City of Falls Church schools.

Arlene was born to Robert White Haslam and Lillian Stuke Haslam in Lincoln Park, NJ. She spent most of her youth in Little Neck, Long Island. At age 17, after graduating from high school, she moved to Arlington, VA., where she lived with her sister Marion and her family while continuing her education at George Washington University, and working at the Navy Annex in Washington, DC.

Beginning in 1942, and for the remainder of the war, she studied to be a cryptologist and managed a crew matching up similarities of incoming encrypted Japanese messages to be passed to the code breakers. While working there, she met a coworker, Ensign Charles Andrew Jensen, who was working on the same project, but in a different department. They fell in love and were married on December 2, 1944. They lived in Charles's hometown of Arlington, VA, until he finished their home in Falls Church.

During the "raising the children" years, Arlene, a dedicated and true patriot, founded The Falls Church 4th of July Parade, which entertained the East Falls Church citizens and surrounding areas for seventeen years, until it ended in 1971. She always made sure each child had a costume. If not, she would make one and be sure each child received a certificate for their participation. She welcomed all and made every child feel "Special and Patriotic," no matter their origin, age, or disability. She continued the belief "All are welcome," throughout her entire life. Also, she was a mother to all.

Arlene will always be remembered for her kindness, her love of life, her love of gardening (especially her azaleas), cooking and sewing. No one will ever forget her lovely smile. She will be missed by all, especially by her devoted daughters Judy Jensen of Falls Church, and Sandra Jensen-Polk and husband Ted of Hanover, VA, and of course, her cat Orange.

The family will receive friends on Monday, November 27, 2017, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 1102 West Broad St., Falls Church, VA 22046. A graveside service will be held at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, VA on Tuesday, November 28, 2017. Attendees will gather at Murphy Funeral Home At 10:00 a.m., then proceed to the cemetery for the 11:00 a.m. service, where she will be put to her final rest with her husband and many of her relatives and friends nearby.

We extend a very special thank you to all her caregivers, and to Capital Hospice for all their loving and dedicated care.
