On November 29, 2017, Arsenia Cota Torres, 94, born in 1922 to Carmen Romero Cota and Pablo Cota in Phoenix, Arizona, joined her husband, Carlos and son Chucky in Heaven. Ever since she was a young girl, Arsenia followed St Francis' words, "for it is in giving that we receive." She was not a teacher, social worker, or lawyer, yet she was all this and more. In her every day actions, she chose not only to treat everyone with kindness and respect but also to help create a better life for her family, neighbors, and community. Sometimes, it was helping a neighbor translate English into Spanish or writing a letter for a mother who had a son fighting a war overseas. At other times, it was collecting and distributing clothes for those in need or helping the elderly file for social security. As a proud American citizen, she last voted in the presidential election at the age of 93. Arsenia-or mom as we called her-graduated from Monroe Elementary School, attended Phoenix Union High School, and was a graduate of Glendale Community College where she tutored ESL students in English and math and arranged for educational and cultural tours in Arizona and Mexico. Arsenia was also a creative and accomplished dress designer and home-maker. But most of all, Arsenia was an intelligent, loving mom and grandmother who taught her family about love, equality, and hard work. She leaves behind daughters Theresa Roop (Ernie); Cecilia Best (Stoddard); Linda Torres; and Rachel Carrillo, as well as six grandchildren: Theresa Tweeddale, Lisa Sexauer, Corey Best, Lisa Carrillo, MariaLinda Miles, and Anthony Torres. Great-great grandchildren are Jaimie, Johnny, Joey, and Theresa Rocha, as well as Kristopher Urquides. Special thanks to the wonderful caretakers Alma Ochoa and Gloria Villa. There will be a visitation Monday, December 11, at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary from 5p.m. to 6p.m. with a Rosary service beginning at 6p.m. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday 10a.m. at Saint Simon and Jude Cathedral. Interment will take place at St. Francis Cemetery. Visit the guest book at
