Barbara Schwertmann, age 80, of Granite City, IL, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Rosewood Care Center, Edwardsville, IL. Barbara was born on December 17, 1934 in Granite City, IL, a daughter to the late Earl Voss Sr. and Ruby (Riggs) Voss. On June 30, 1962, Barbara Voss married Frank Schwertmann, the love of her life, in Granite City, IL. Barbara was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family. She was a past PTA President at Webster School. Barbara was a member of Senior Circle at Gateway Medical Center, Senior Citizens at Chouteau Township and a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader. Barbara was always fascinated by hummingbirds; she was also an accomplished artist and a professional roller skater at Stopkotte. She loved life, she loved to laugh, but most of all she loved her family. Barbara will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by one sister, Effie Lou Humphreys; and three brothers, Bethel "Bud' Voss, Earl Voss Jr., and Larry Vos; She is survived by her devoted husband of fifty-two years, Frank Schwertmann Sr. of Granite City, IL; loving children, Joanie (Rex) Buckingham of Edwardsville, IL and Frank (Theresa) Schwertmann Jr. of Glen Carbon, IL; twin brother, Billy Voss; two sisters, Gertrude "Jane" Kaucher and Donna McIlvoy; proud grandmother to Mandy (Josh) Heil, Trent (Jess) Buckingham, John Schwertmann, Justin Schwertmann, Lacey Buckingham, Krystal Ringling and Brandon Ringling and proud great-grandmother to Jaden Heil, Hailey Buckingham and Ryker Buckingham; extended family and many dear friends. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, IL. In celebration of her life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Irwin Chapel, Granite City, IL with Pastor Sandy Schoeber officiating. Barbara will be laid to rest at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon, IL. Memorial donations may be given to Gateway Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
