Barbara W. Johnston 92, died peacefully at home with her family by her
side in her daughter's home in Medway, Massachusetts on February 10,
2017. Barbara was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jesse E. G.
Johnston Sr. She was born in Ivoryton, CT, on September 22, 1924 to
Grace B. Way and Henry M. L. Way. Barbara was a native of Old
Saybrook, CT and graduated from Old Saybrook High School class of
Barbara was married to Rollin W. Skilton on December 28, 1946, a
West Point graduate and officer in the US Army during the Korean war,
where he lost his life. After she and her daughter returned home from
Japan, she bought a house that she lived in until recently. Barbara met
her second husband Jesse in 1952 and they married five years later on
May 11, 1957. Jesse adopted Barbara's daughter and they were
blessed with 2 more children. Barbara and Jesse always kept the
Skilton family in their lives.
Barbara's joy was in being with her family and raising her children. She
was employed by the Phone Company, our Town Hall, as well as
serving as a census taker, and volunteering with Special Olympics.
Barbara led a brownie troop and was active in town politics, the board of
education, and the republican party. She was a creative writer, and
loved social events with friends and family. Playing bridge and walking
was a source of recreation for most of her life. Barbara also loved her
church family, she was a life member of the First Church of Christ in
Saybrook, Congregational, and in later years spent time in the Stuart
Congregational Church in Florida, where they had a second home.
She leaves behind her children Barbara Tramontozzi and her husband
Daniel, Susan Johnston, Jesse Johnston Jr.. Her grandchildren
Christopher, his wife Sherri, Alexander and Elizabeth Tramontozzi,
Jesse, David and Dylan Johnston and great grandchildren Gavin and
Brady Tramontozzi. Also, her sister-in-laws Dorothy and Claudia Way,
and Janet and Harriet Johnston and brother-in-law Donald Skilton and
his wife Alice. She was predeceased by her parents, and her siblings;
Clifford and Henry Way, and Betty Cousins and her husband John. She
also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
Barbara was a gracious soul that loved fiercely. She never hesitated to
express her love to everyone she met. Donations can be made to the
Alzheimer's Association.
Calling hours are from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday February 17th at Swan
Funeral Home on 1224 Boston Post Rd, Old Saybrook CT. A funeral
service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday February 18th at First
Church of Christ in Saybrook, Congregational at 366 Main St, Old
Saybrook CT
