Beaumont Barringer Palmer Cathcart, a lifelong resident of Columbia, S.C., died Monday, October 30, 2017. Mrs. Cathcart was the former Lucy Beaumont Barringer, born in Columbia, South Carolina, July 14, 1929 to parents Laurence Scott Barringer and Louise Dulin Barringer. When Beaumont was a child, she and her parents lived at the Hotel Columbia which her family owned. Beaumont recalled riding her bicycle around the ballroom floor and on the pathways at the S.C. State House.



Beaumont was educated at McMaster School and attended junior and senior high school at St. Catherine's Episcopal School in Richmond, Virginia, graduating in 1948. She also attended the University of South Carolina for several years before her marriage to Mr. Paul Trapier Palmer.



Beaumont was first married to the late Paul Trapier Palmer of Charleston, S. C. and they lived in Columbia. They were married in 1951 and had a son and two daughters. Mr. Palmer died in 1982. In 1996, Beaumont married W. Richard Cathcart. He was first married to the late Emma Poag Cathcart. Mr. Cathcart died in 2012.



Mrs. Beaumont Cathcart is survived by her son, Paul Trapier Palmer, Jr. and his wife, Phoebe of Columbia; daughter, Louise Lynah Palmer of Bend, Oregon and daughter, Mary Laurence Gaddy of Columbia, South Carolina; and stepson, Peter Calhoun Cathcart and his wife, Mary of Lexington, Kentucky. Mrs. Cathcart, affectionately called “Beausie”, is also survived by grandchildren, Mrs. Anne Grace Gaddy Brasington (Gerald), Mrs. Marjorie M. Palmer Cleary (Patrick) of Columbia, S. C., Mrs. Mary Palmer Gaddy Copeland (Jeremy) of lrmo, S.C., Alyson Palmer Nicklas of Boulder, Colo. and Palmer Heyward Nicklas of Oakland, Oregon; two stepgrandchildren, David Cathcart and Emily Cathcart of Lexington, Ky.; three great-grandchildren, Allen and Sybil Brasington and Lucy Copeland; brother-in-law, William A. Rooker of Atlanta, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews by her two marriages, Mrs. J. Cantey Heath, Jr. (Lee Rooker), Mrs. Haden Bohannon (Louise Rooker), Mrs. Benjamin Lett (Beaumont Rooker), Mrs. Mitch Seal (Helen Palmer), Mrs, Jay Parker (Patty Palmer), Honor Bulkley, Eloise Biscoe, Mrs. Wayne Kirby (Nancy), Katherine Fersner, and Mrs. Richard Hepfer (Kitty), Laurence Scott Barringer III (Tracy), James Hugh Barringer (Roni), James L. Palmer (Sherry), Harry T. Palmer (Diane), John Dowdney and Stephen Dowdney. In addition to her husbands, Beaumont was predeceased by her brother, Laurence Scott Barringer, Jr.; her sister, Mrs. William A. Rooker (Mary Scott Barringer); brother-in-law, James L. Palmer; son-in-law, W. Walker Gaddy; nephew, Earl Biscoe III; and sisters-in-law, Mrs. James L. Palmer (Pat), Mrs. James Biscoe Torrey (Lily), Anne Palmer Bulkley and Ella Heyward Palmer,



Mrs. Cathcart was a member of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, The Forest Lake Club, The Palmetto Club, The Columbia Committee of the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of S. C., The Junior League of Columbia (serving that organization as Vice President and President), The Assembly, The Columbia Ball and Historic Columbia. She was a former member of the Columbia Garden Club and the Holly Garden Club.



The service will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Martin's-in the-Fields Episcopal Church, with visitation afterwards in the Parish Hall. The interment in Elmwood Cemetery will be private. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
