Bernice Grandison Ward Dormio, age 86, transitioned on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. She is the beloved wife of the late Samuel Leo Dormio and mother of Victor Ward, Monya Ward and Darryl Ward (Detra). Bernice is preceded in death by her parents Willie and Thelma Grandison and her sister, Eleanor G. Lombard. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Bernice had a love of music at a very young age. She started playing instruments in elementary school and later joined the L.B. Landry High School band, which earned her a music scholarship to Southern University in Baton Rouge. She went on to earn the first Masters of Music degree at Loyola University. Her teaching career progressed from teaching music at Franklinton Elementary, to becoming the chorus director at Lincoln High School. Later, she became the first band director at L.W. Higgins High School.
After dedicating 35 years to the Jefferson Parish Public School System, she continued to volunteer in her community, serving on the Herbert Wallace Fire Department Board. She also taught adult literacy with the YWCA Operation Mainstream Program. Bernice also served as a docent at the New Orleans Museum of Arts. She was an officer for the Jefferson Parish Historical Society. She also held several roles on her Baha'i Local Spiritual Assembly, where she served for over 40 years. Bernice will be sadly missed by all who loved her.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Services from Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home Chapel, 5101 Westbank Expressway, on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at 10:00 am. Visitation will begin at 8:30 am. Interment will be in Restlawn Park Cemetery in Avondale.
