Berta Elena Harvey, 88, of Merritt Island, Florida passed away Wednesday Nov 9, 2016. She died exactly 1 month later and to the day and time as her beloved Husband of 66 years, Bernard G. Harvey. They were a love story from the time they first met and their inspiration continued throughout their lifetime together.
Berta was born in Punta Arenas, Chile; the closest incorporated city in the world to the South Pole. Seals and other cold-water animals were not unusual sightings in town. Berta had an ideal childhood that contributed to her bubbly and cheerful personality she always managed to spread around to others. This personality got her crowned Miss Punta Arenas Spring Queen at the tender age of 16. Berta also excelled in piano and performed public classical concerts throughout her life.
Berta and Bernard met when she was hired to be his secretary upon his arrival in Punta Arenas to run a branch of the Geophysical study of Chile, looking for Oil in the Tierra del Fuego area. It didn't take long for Bernard to propose but it took Berta one year to accept! They married May 6 ,1951.
While their life together began In Punta Arenas, their travels took them north where they settled in Santiago, capitol of Chile. They emigrated to The US in 1955 so that Bernard would work with the then fledgling American Space Program. The Harvey's lived in many diverse locations in the United States, settling in Cocoa Beach from 1964 through 1969, leaving the area after the Apollo program ended. The Harvey's returned to Merritt Island in 1986 from Colorado Springs after retiring.
Berta loved to listen and play classical music. Together with Bernard, Berta also loved to travel especially to Chile to visit family.
Berta was the last survivor of her sibling generation. Berta is preceded in death by her 4 sisters (Sara, Juana, Olgita and Vita along with their extended families) and 2 brothers (Tulo, Henry and their extended families).
Berta is survived by daughter, Astrid Heard; son-in-law, Sam Heard; grandchildren: Rianna Day and Michael Heard; grandchildren-in-law, Andy Day and Lacey Heard; and 4 great-grandchildren, Elena Day, Clara Drew Day, Sammy Day and Harrison Heard. We will always miss her warm heart and cheerful personality
A visitation will be held Thusday, November, 2016 from 2:30-3PM with the service to begin at 3PM at Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home in Merritt Island. Interment will follow services at Brevard Memorial Park.
