Waterville- Bertha "Mary" McGowan, at the age of 97, passed peacefully at Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home on Sunday, September 12, 2010.

Mary was born on January 23, 1913 in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales and was the daughter of William Bertrum James and Mary (Hughes) James. Mary attended schools in Wales and graduated from the University of Manchester (U.K.). While teaching in England during WWII, she was windowed. After the War, Mary and her young daughter were brought to Montreal by her brother, William "Jimmy" James, where she continued to teach English. Mary then meet John "Jack" McGowan and remarried in 1948. The rest of her life was spent in Waterville, Maine. She was predeceased by her husband Jack in 1999.

Mary enjoyed being involved in community activities at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, was an active member of the Garden Club, Friends of Music (Colby), Friends of Art (Colby), and volunteered for the Thayer Hospital Auxiliary. Mary was an avid gardener, who also enjoyed painting, resorting antique furniture, and traveling the world with her brother Jimmy.

She is survived by her daughter Rosemary (McGowan) Phillips, her son David J. McGowan, her stepdaughter Terry (McGowan) Heavy, and her stepson Robert G. McGowan. Her stepson John H. McGowan, Jr. predeceased her in 2007.

She is also survived by her four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and her little dog Izzy.

Special thanks to all of the staff on the second floor of Mt. St. Joseph Nursing Home. Everyone was so caring and made Mary feel comfortable and loved.

Visiting hours for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, September 21 at 6:30 until 7:30PM at the Redington Funeral Home on 5 Park St. in Waterville. A funeral service and celebration of her life will be held at 10:00AM Wednesday, September 22 at the St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Waterville with a burial to be followed at the Pine Grove Cemetery.
