Betsy Ferrell Amis Daugherty was born in the Thomas Cotton home on January 21, 1932 in Dardanelle, Arkansas to W. D. "Bill" Amis and Elizabeth "Nina" Cotton Amis. Her family moved throughout Kansas during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression for the family business, Amis Construction Company. Their travels took her to several S.W. Kansas towns, including Rolla, Syracuse, Mullinville, Satanta, Eureka, Gove City, and Coldwater. In 1935, the business took Betsy and her family to Watonga, OK. Amis Construction Company completed various projects, building highways, bridges, and dams. After Watonga, the family moved to Waurika, Chickasha, and Woodward. The family eventually settled in Oklahoma City in 1940.
In Oklahoma City, Betsy attended Harding Jr. High School and graduated from Classen High School in 1949. Throughout her life, she enjoyed lunch once a month with a few of her graduating classmates; they called themselves the "Forty-Niner Lunch Bunch." In 1951, she graduated from Ward Belmont College in Nashville, TN. She then attended the University of Oklahoma, and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Betsy worked as a clothing representative and model for women's clothing designers for several years. She married United States District Judge Frederick A. Daugherty on December 15, 1966.
Betsy's nieces and nephews fondly remember her quick wit and humor. She was always at the ready with a funny and clever response. Her family will miss their darling "Aunt Betsy" at the family gatherings. She will always be remembered for the special birthday song she would sing to them.
Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Nina, husband, Fred, and brother, Dave. She will be missed dearly and the family is hopeful she has rejoined her brother, Dave, who died exactly one week prior to her passing. We are very thankful for the extraordinary care bestowed upon her by her nurse, Rhonda, and her special hospice nurses, Suzanne and Katie.
Betsy is survived by sister-in-law Susan Amis; nieces and nephews, Dave III and wife, Angela; Page Beatty and husband, Ken; Scott; Suzy and husband, Jim; Charlie and wife, Cheri; and Rebecca and husband, Jeff; great nieces and great nephews, WDA IV (Bill), Sarah and husband, Matt; Adam and wife, Charlotte; Daniel and wife, Miranda; Haydn, Bo and wife, Carisa; Mason, Jasper and wife, Solimar; Josephine, Claire, Quinn, Rose, Evan, Audrey, Henry, Channing, Derrien, Maggie and Harper; 6 great great nieces and nephews Tessa, Cooper, Archer, Jackson, Kate, and Huckleberry. At her request there will be a private family service at Rose Hill Mausoleum.
