Born in 1932 and raised in Kenbridge, VA, she was the daughter of Nona Boguess and Winston R. Tanner and sister of Sue Byrd and Anna Lee.

After attending Peace College and graduating from RPI (now VCU) she married John Wall "Jack" Allen and started their family in Richmond, VA. A life-long advocate of education, she taught kindergarten, lower school and served as librarian and Asst. Headmistress at Huguenot Academy.

Ever mindful of the strength and dignity of Southern women, she spent decades as a Girl Scout leader developing the confidence and skillsets of future generations of Virginians. A staunch defender of the environment, she instilled her love of nature into many generations of young Virginians.

Gracious and big-hearted, Betsy Jane may be best remembered as a lover of animals. Along with her family, she rescued and nurtured hundreds (thousands?) of stray pets and wild animals; never once turning away the opportunity to help a wounded or lost soul. Over the years, she raised her beloved dogs, cats and rabbits with love and care.

Her favorite hobby was arts and crafts. A talented artisan, she won Best in Show awards in multiple categories year-in-and-year-out at the Virginia State Fair, and donated her time and crafts to many charitable organizations. After her daughter Lee's death, she and Frances Crutchfield organized and led a successful cancer fundraising program, Relay for Life/Lee's Scouts.

Predeceased by her husband, Jack Allen and her daughter, Lynda Lee Allen; Betsy Jane is survived by her sons Scott, Kent and his wife Jane, and Todd and his wife Judy, as well as her daughter Lee's sons Layton and Cory and husband Robert. She was very proud of all her other treasured grandchildren; Juli (and husband Joshua), Davis (and wife Lindsey), Althea and Cassady as well as her great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
