February 25, 1926 – December 13, 2016

Bette was the daughter of John and Alma Hood of Walker County, Alabama. She graduated from Cordova high school early left that small town to seek life and at the age of 17 went to work at Ft. McClellan during WWII where she would meet many of her lifelong friends. She would tell her children stories of that time, some sad, about the soldiers she met who never came home, some happy about dancing in the officers club all night to the sounds of the swing bands. After the war she worked in Washington D.C., Miami, Tuscaloosa before settling down to raise a family in Huntsville. She excelled at everything she did. She loved literature, poetry, music and especially history and gifted her children with a home filled with all those things. She was a firm believer in reading to her children from their earliest ages and instilling in them the love of seeking knowledge through reading. She was a long time resident of Monte Sano and was very active in the early days of the Monte Sano Civic Association. First and foremost, she was a wonderful mother. Her children were her life her pride and joy, despite the many tribulations that they caused her. She was a lifelong Alabama football, at 90 she would read the sports page before anything else. She was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, a brother and her beloved husband, Raul Peña, Jr., and is survived by her children, David B. Bell and Vicki A. Bell, her sister, Patricia Coffey (Bill), her step-son, Raul Peña, III (Lisa), and beloved nieces and a nephew, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Valhalla Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. A funeral service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 17th. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church or the ASPCA.
