Bettina Young, 84, of Benton died at home after a long battle with cancer. She was born March 5, 1927 in Benton, the daughter of Harold and Helena (Boothby) Brown. Bettina attended Benton and Fairfield schools graduating from Lawrence High School in 1944. She attended Westbrook Jr. College for a year before joining the Cadet Nurse Corps (Army) training program in 1945. She completed her training in Lewiston and received her RN certification in October 1948.
Bettina demonstrated her loving, caring nature throughout her life but especially during the fifty years she spent working as a nurse. After becoming RN certified she worked at Thayer Hospital in Waterville, rotating through various departments such as the Emergency Room, Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac Care Unit. Focusing on the CCU, she became a certified CPR instructor. She retired from Thayer in 1987 but soon went to work part time at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield until fully retiring in 1997.
Bettina had an adventurous spirit and loved the outdoors especially the ocean. In 1970 Bettina became certified in scuba diving as an activity to participate in with her son and was very active in a local scuba club. Having grown up on a small farm along the Sebasticook River she developed a strong work ethic and enjoyed working with the farm equipment. She always maintained that she preferred the outside chores to housework and readily pitched in with haying and mowing. Until the last couple of years she could still be seen with her chainsaw out in the woods cutting wood for the winter. She also enjoyed rides on her motorcycle until a few years ago. Bettina loved traveling and joined groups that traveled to England and Israel as well as joining with friends as they traveled to Spain, Hawaii and Alaska. She was a member of the historical society and the local senior citizens club. Her active life included a lot of swimming and plenty of yardwork.
Bettina was a longtime member of Brown Memorial United Methodist Church and played in the Bell Choir there. Her faith was very important to her and she was very generous to those around her including opening her home to others on more than one occasion and spending many hours keeping her sister company. She shared her property and resources with her whole family and asked for little in return.
Bettina was predeceased by an infant daughter, Betsy Ann and her parents Harold and Helena Brown. She is survived by her son Dr. David Young and wife Sharon (Pierce), three grandchildren, Scott Young of Benton, Sgt. Nathan Young (USMC) and wife Jenefer (Jackson) of Jacksonville, NC, and Heather Young of Bangor. She is also survived by one great granddaughter, Maurin Young of Jacksonville, NC, a sister Terry Spaulding of Benton and a brother, Ross Brown of Benton as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She will be very missed by her family, church friends, close friends Anita, CeeCee and Gail and her special kitty friend, Mojo.
The family would like to give a special thanks the kind and caring support of Healthreach Hospice, especially Lori and Katherine who helped guide us through this difficult time.
Visiting hours will be held at Veilleux Funeral Home in Waterville on Saturday from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1pm at Brown Memorial United Methodist Church in Clinton with burial to follow afterwards at Evergreen Cemetery in Clinton.
In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated in Bettina's memory to the Brown Memorial UMC Trustee's Fund or the American Cancer Society.
