Betty Jo Defoor Whiten
March 6, 1937 - April ¬9, 2018

Betty Jo Defoor Whiten, age 81, passed from this life into Paradise on April 9, 2018. She is wonderfully "absent from the body, and present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8). She leaves a devoted husband of 62 years, Ray Whiten of Toccoa; children Susan (Fred) Head of Easley, Rick (Debbie) Whiten of Easley, and Jeff (Suzanne) Whiten of Piedmont; and is preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel Ray Whiten, Jr. Betty also leaves a sister Jeanette Defoor Moore of Toccoa and brothers Maurice Defoor of Seneca, and Dan Defoor of Jacksonville, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by father Sanford Mac and mother Lucy Looney Defoor and siblings Waymon, Dorsey, Floyd Ray, John, Henry, and Jessie Hollingsworth.

Betty took great joy in her grandchildren, Andrew Head, Jessica Head, Zach (Samantha) Head, Cadence Whiten, Laura (Casey) Hord, Hannah (Ryan) Lemere, and Jesse Whiten. She was also blessed to have great-grandchildren, Carter Hord, Riley Lemere, Foster Head, and another great-grandson in July.

Jesus said, "Let the children come unto me." Betty lovingly taught many children through the preschool and children's ministries of churches in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. She also had her own daycare for many years.

Betty had worked at WABCO, Toccoa, Georgia Baptist Conference Center, Toccoa, and New Prospect Baptist Church Daycare, Anderson but her greatest work was with her family and alongside her husband Ray in ministry. Betty was instrumental in the success of many productions of the church through the making of costumes and banners, as well as caring for the cast and children.

A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, April 14, 2018, 2:00 at Sunnyside Baptist Church, Toccoa, with Dr. Jesse Colbert and Dr. Roddy Turner officiating. Receiving of friends will be at 1:00, prior to the service. The family will have a private burial service.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to Betty's hospice care provider, Pruitt Cares Foundation, 1626 Jeurgens Court, Norcross, GA, 30093 or Sunnyside Baptist Church Growth Campaign, 1154 Mize Road, Toccoa, GA, 30577.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.whitlockmortuary.net
