Mrs. Betty Jo Bridges Smart, 84, of Hildebran passed away Sunday August 6, 2017 at Trinity Ridge in Hickory following a period of declining health.
Betty Jo, or Bed-Jo as her father affectionately called her, was born January 2, 1933 at her parent's home in Hildebran, NC. She was the eldest child of the late Marion Posey Bridges and Mattie Iola Mosteller, and was proceeded in death by her parents, her late husband Murl Ray Smart, Sr., infant son Jerry Ray Smart, and brother Charles Lamar Bridges, Sr.
Betty Jo is survived by her sons, Murl Ray Smart, Jr. and wife Betty of Mountain View, Troy Daren Smart, Sr. and wife Jeanne of Lenoir, and Maxwell Corey Smart and wife Janie of Hildebran; ; daughters Linda Smart Greene and husband David of Jacksonville, FL, and Nancy Smart Caudill and husband Quentin Murph of Columbia, SC; brother, Douglas R. Bridges and wife Edith of Hildebran; sister, Frances A. Geer and husband Robert "Bob" of Reyonldsburg, OH; sister-in-law Christine H. Bridges of Icard; along with more than a dozen grandchildren; and multiple great grandchildren.
Betty Jo had several passions in life. She loved the Lord, her family, her church, and light houses. She delighted in her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. It was her wish, that all her family would come to know Jesus Christ as Savior, and for them attend and support their local Church. Betty Jo was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church Hildebran. She was a godly woman who unselfishly served her church in many capacities from Sunday School to WMU, GA's, Acteens, and multiple other positions. She loved her family and her church dearly, and she loved the beach- and especially light houses. She had visited each light house along the NC coast, while vacationing many times with her family; the Currituck Light House being her favorite. Betty Jo lived her life by example. An example of love that was demonstrated by actions. She loved life, and lived it to the fullest. She leaves behind a legacy for all to remember and cherish.
A funeral service will be held 5:00PM Wednesday August 9, 2017 at First Baptist Church Hildebran with the Rev. Ron Arndt and Pastor Daren Smart officiating.
Interment will follow the service in the First Baptist Church Hildebran Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 4:00PM to 5:00PM at First Baptist Church Hildebran.
The family would like to thank Catawba Hospice, Trinity Ridge, and First Baptist Church Hildebran for the love, support, and care given to Betty Jo.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Hildebran at PO Box 220 Hildebran, NC 28637.
