Billy Joe King July 8, 1944 - March 26, 2017 Billy Joe King passed away peacefully after an extended illness on March 26, 2017 in Hughson at the age of 72. Billy was born in Atoka, Oklahoma in 1944 to his parents Autra and Irene King. They moved to Poway, California in 1947 and shortly thereafter, moved to Escondido where Billy grew up on 4th street. He attended Central Elementary, Grant Junior High and graduated Escondido High School in 1963. He met his wife, Brenda June Childress and they were married in 1963. They had their son, Michael in 1964 and daughter, Tracy in 1968. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad and Forest service in California, Arizona, Utah and Colorado as a heavy equipment operator, where there was no piece of equipment he could not operate. Always striving for more he landing a job as master machinist at ATI in Escondido and then advanced to Gulf General Atomic in San Diego. After visiting his in-laws in Oakdale, he decided to move his family to Modesto and purchase his first Quik Stop in 1973. He then purchased another Quik Stop years later and then purchased The Country Cash store in Salida with partner Joe Hill. In 1978 he purchased A & A Portables, Inc. which had four employees. He grew the business to 24 employees and then in 1998 his son and daughter-in-law joined him and helped grow the company to its current size of 45 employees.

During these years he was an avid softball player and golfer. In 1995 he joined the Modesto Sunrise Rotary where he was very active and made life long friends. He purchased land and built homes in Mexico which became his favorite thing to do and be proud of. He would fish, golf and explore all parts around his homes there. During this time he met Betty Sturtevant and they later married in 1999. They enjoyed an adventurous life living there part of the year and making many more life long friends. Up until the last year, when both of their health started to fail, they were enjoying their life in Mexico.
Billy leaves his wife, Betty King, his son, Mike & wife Debbie and grandchildren, Tyler & Danielle of Turlock, his daughter, Tracy and grandchildren Tara & Hannah of Delhi. His brothers, Robert Myrl of Texas and Richard of Escondido. His stepsons, Andrew Sturtevant & wife Tara and step grandchildren, Quade, Bettie, Juliet & Scarlett of Morgan Hill and David Sturtevant and step grandchildren, Kaeli, Dayne, Carter & Lily of Oakdale. He also had several nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of Billy's life on Friday, March 31st, 2017 at Lakewood Memorial Park 900 Santa Fe Ave, Hughson. Visitation will be on Friday from 11:00am to 3:00pm and the celebration will begin at 3:00pm
