The first African American female doctor in Delaware, C. Patricia Turner Debnam, M.D., died Tuesday, March 24, 2015, in Warminster, PA. A resident of Horsham, PA for the past 10 years, Patricia was the widow of Dr. Charles H. Debnam, of Marshallton, DE. Patricia, the daughter of the late Patrick William Turner and Helen Esther Henderson Turner, and sister of the late Helen E. "Betty" Turner Hayes, M.D; mother of Charlene D. Jenkins (J. David) of Horsham, PA, and Christopher C. P. Debnam (Barbara W.) of Wilmington, DE; grandmother of David Alexander Jenkins, Morgan Louise Debnam, Ashley Christine Debnam and fiancé, Derek Allen Hodges, and Christine Lee Berna Link (Kenneth J.). Dr. Turner was a resident psychiatrist at Delaware State Hospital, and later had a private practice as obstetrician and general practitioner in Wilmington, DE, for over 50 years. She served on the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging, was a member of the Board of the Matrix Research Institute, the American Medical Association, and was a lifetime member of Quota International. When asked about challenges faced in her career based on the views of others particularly regarding her race or gender, Patricia said it was difficult, but she was successful as a result of following her philosophy, "If someone had a problem with me as a woman or an African American, I always thought it was their problem, not mine." A viewing will take place at Congo Funeral Home, 24th & Market Sts., Wilmington, DE, Sunday, March 29, from 3:00 to 6:00pm. Services will be held Monday, March 30, 2015, at 11:00am, at The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew (SSAM), 719 N. Shipley St., Wilmington, DE. Burial, Gracelawn Memorial Park.
