The beautiful and talented Mrs. New Orleans 1954 pageant winner, Carmelita Chiasson Batten, maintained her cheerful demeanor and optimistic outlook in spite of the breast cancer diagnosis she received over fourteen years ago and the subsequent treatments and hospitalizations.
Carmie, as she was known by family and friends, died on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, in Tomball, Texas. She was born in 1930 and grew up in Westwego, Louisiana, where she attended Stella Worley High School and later graduated from Moler Beauty School in New Orleans.
Carmie was a people person, compassionate, and empathetic. She made friends easily and kept in contact with friends as far away as Scotland where she lived for a time. She enjoyed a traveling and collecting mementos from her trips. She loved animals and was a real cat "whisperer". Carmie was blessed with a green thumb, and her gardens and flowers were always beautiful and well maintained. She loved to go dancing and enjoyed a good spicy Bloody Mary. But her real passion in life was her family whom she loved unconditionally. To show her love, Carmie was frequently found in the kitchen cooking up delicious Cajun food. If you came to visit Carmie, you know you would be well fed!
Carmie is survived by her four children, Tanya Baldassaro, Scarlett DeLaune, Todd Anderson and Chris Anderson. Her daughter Shelly DeLaune Baham preceded her in death. She is a proud grandmother of Lance Baldassaro, Paige Baldassaro, Donald Sevin, Jr., Connor Anderson, Christina Anderson, Hannah Anderson, Sarah Jewell, and Chris Alvey; and great grandmother to Blake Baldassaro, Gage Baldassaro, and Victoria Steele.
Please remember Carmelita with donations to the ASPCA or your local animal shelter.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service at Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 5101 Westbank Expy., Marrero, LA on Monday, January 23, 2017 at 11:00 am.
