COLUMBIA - Carolyn Smith McComb of Woodlake Village in Murrell’s Inlet, South Carolina passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2017. A beloved mother, grandmother and sister, she would have celebrated her 75th birthday in November.

Carolyn was born in Washington, DC on November 9, 1942. As the daughter of an Army Colonel, Carolyn traveled the United States and the world as a child. But she considered South Carolina her home, having lived there most of her adult life. As a social worker for over 30 years, Carolyn dedicated her career to helping kids at risk get a chance in life. When she retired she worked tirelessly for the “Special Kid” Sponsor Program in Murrell’s Inlet, continuing to help kids in therapeutic foster care.

She was known for her Bloody Mary making expertise at the Special Kids Annual Charity Golf Tournament along with her tenacity for fundraising and commitment to ensuring that every kid she came across got a shot in life through this program.

Carolyn had many loves; her family, the beach and cards – especially Bridge and Canasta. She was always up to teach a novice, to coach a beginner and to school an expert in a card game. She was an enthusiastic member of the Red Hat Society and an avid Gamecock supporter.

She was the proud mother of Kim Cubine (Chris Quillian) of Washington, D.C., Steve Cubine (Julie Blackwell Cubine) of Fort Mill, S.C. and James McComb (Megan Mecklenberg McComb) of Columbia. She received and gave tremendous joy to her three grandchildren, Trent Cubine of Columbia, Jake Cubine of Fort Mill and Charleston “Charley” Quillian of Washington, D.C. Carolyn is also survived by her siblings, Bill G. Smith of Gaithersburg, MD, Cheryl Simecheck of Wimberley, Texas and Beth Smith of Kaufman, Texas. Also, her beloved niece and nephews, Carrington and Carter Simecheck of Texas and Andy Smith of Maryland. She was predeceased by her parents, Colonel and Mrs. Bill G. Smith (Betty) and her nephew Ben Smith.

Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church in Murrells Inlet. A celebration of life will follow at her favorite restaurant, Hog Heaven BBQ in Pawley’s Island, S.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Low Country Special Kids,; or Special Kid Sponsor Program, c/o Carolyn McComb, Memorial 1908 Bingham Court, Myrtle Beach, SC 29588.
