Age 85, Tampa, Fl., passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 18 after fighting a battle with Alzheimer’s disease for the last 12 years. He was surrounded by family, with the love of his life for 62 years, Betty Whirley, at his bedside.
Born October 13, 1931 in Marianna, Fl. to Eldridge and Rosa Lee Whirley, he left home after high school to serve 20+ proud years in the USAF. He worked on B-47 and B-52 bombers and performed detailed inspections on the missile systems. He was a star softball player at Dyess AFB. After retiring from USAF in 1969, he began a second career as a supervisor in the record and tape industry. He enjoyed all types of music, mainly country, pop and rock. He especially enjoyed listening to and singing songs with his daughter, Karen, up until his last day. They had a special and loving bond.
Aubrey, as family called him, was a master carpenter! He could make and fix anything! He was “Secret Santa” to his nieces and nephews making handcrafted toys for all. He brightened our lives with his great sense of humor and loved to pull a good practical joke! He & Betty enjoyed traveling, especially in his later years, to Scotland and Ireland.
Golf was his favorite pastime. After golfing for over 40 years, he finally hit a hole in one at the age of 77!
We are so very broken hearted but we all know Aubrey is up there in heaven taking all the angel’s quarters on the golf course.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; Daughter, Karen and cherished Son in law, Lorne Bell. 2 sisters: Betty Sue Lewis & Madeline Smith. Sisters in Law- Barbara Culbreath & Kay Hillard. He will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews and the numerous lifelong friends Charles (Aubrey) made along the way.
The family will receive friends for visitation from 10:30am – 11:30 am at Blount and Curry on MacDill Ave. A funeral service will follow at 11:30 am. Interment will be at Florida National Cemetery with full military honors. Flowers will be warmly accepted or donations can be made to Metropolitan Ministries.
