CHARLES ECKMAN JR., 96, died Sunday, January 15, 2017, at The Towne House Retirement Community. Born January 3, 1921, in Andrews, IN, he was the son of Charles Emery and Jennie Margaret (Slagal) Eckman. He graduated from Andrews High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. After the war, he earned a bachelor's degree in physics at Manchester College (now Manchester University) and dual master's degrees in physics and library science at Indiana University. Charles moved to Fort Wayne in 1953 to work as the medical librarian at the Veteran's Administration Hospital. He also taught physics part time in the evenings at Indiana Institute of Technology. While at the VA, he met Phyllis Caffee, a nurse and his future wife. The couple married on April 28, 1956. After retiring from the VA in 1980, Charles worked full time at Allen County Public Library until 1990. In his spare time, he read voraciously, watched sports, and enjoyed identifying and solving math and physics problems. He was also a member of Plymouth Congregational Church (UCC) in Fort Wayne for 55 years. He will be greatly missed by family and friends, and remembered for his quick wit and impeccable memory, kindness and generosity.

Surviving are a son, Chuck Eckman (Franck Corredor) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a daughter, Catherine A. Eckman (Robert Smith) of Columbia, SC; seven nieces, and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis Caffee Eckman.

Memorial service is 1 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Plymouth Congregational Church, 501 W. Berry Street, with a light reception following. Visitation is from 4 to 7 Friday, January 20, 2017, at Klaehn Fahl & Melton Funeral Home, Wayne Street Chapel, 420 W. Wayne Street. Memorials to Plymouth Congregational Church.
