Dr. Charles E. Schofield 90, a renowned physician and resident of Keene, NH for over 50 years, passed away on Wednesday morning, August 30, 2017 at the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH.

Charles was born in Cranston, Rhode Island on September 21, 1926, the son of William and Ada (Joy) Schofield. He grew up in Cranston and was a graduate of LaSalle Academy in Providence, RI.

He received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH in 1947. Following graduation he attended Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover for two years, transferring to New York University (NYU) where he finished his medical schooling. He interned at Grasslands Hospital in Valhalla, NY, and then from 1954-1957, Charles completed his residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, MA.

Dr. Schofield served as a Division Medical Officer onboard a naval escort destroyer during the end of World War II, and later during the Korean War.

He opened a private practice with Dr. James Ballou, Sr. on Summer Street in Keene, practicing general medicine and surgery for 45 years with privileges at the former Elliot Community Hospital and later with the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene. His practice later moved to Island Street under the name of Cheshire Medical Associates. Dr. Schofield also served as deputy medical examiner for many years in Cheshire County, and also as Police Commissioner.

He was a member of the Board of College Surgeons and the American Medical Association. At the time of his passing, Charles was a longtime member of the Keene Rotary Club and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award.

With a deep-seeded, strong faith, Charles was an active member of the St. Bernard Church in Keene. He was a server during the daily masses, and also served as a Eucharistic Minister during masses, as well as offering communion to patients at the hospital and to those who were unable to leave their homes to attend mass. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 819 of St. Bernard Church.

Charles had a love of sailing on his sailboat, and enjoyed playing golf. He also enjoyed woodworking, and he took great pride in attending to his home, especially the yard and the flower gardens, with his favorite rose bushes always being the recipient of his tender touch. He was also an avid reader. He enjoyed challenging his mind and the minds of his grandchildren by playing chess and cribbage with them. His favorite pastime was the special memories shared with his family, especially with his grandchildren, at the many family gatherings.

He will be greatly missed by many within the community, especially his wife of 23 years, Joyce E. (MacDonald) Schofield of Keene; his children, Mark Schofield of Cotuit, MA, Karen Karlen and her husband, Rick, of Scarborough, ME, Anne Fries and her husband, Jochen, of Pulheim, Germany, Paul Schofield and his wife, Kristi of East Hampstead, NH, Jocelin Gillies and her husband, Joel of Dover, NH; Joyce's children, Audrey Arsenault of Keene, Alison Fischer and her husband, Dwight, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Paula Rocca and her husband, Michael, of Lynnfield, MA, Eric Arsenault of Keene; grandchildren, Christopher and Andrea, Rebecca and Josh, Nathan, Katherine, Andrea, Madison, Erin and Scott, Molli, Carlie, Kai, Alexander, Jordan, Sophia, Grace, Maia, Alec, Kianna, Mallory, Charles; two great-grandchildren Sebastian and Griffin; two sisters, Dorothy Ferrelli of Warwick, RI, Virginia Pomfret of Knoxville, TN; sisters-in-law, Connie Maillet of Northport, FL, Jeannette Wallace of Scarborough, ME; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Joan Schofield in 1991; and two brothers, Bud Schofield and Raymond Schofield.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 10:00AM in the St. Bernard Church, 185 Main Street, Keene. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Main Street, Keene. Family and friends are invited to call on Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:00PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene. The Knights of Columbus will conduct a prayer service at the funeral home Friday evening at 7:00PM.
