COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Pastor Charles Harrison Rice, Sr., 88, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2017 at Anchor Baptist Church with Pastor Rick Kirchinger officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery at Alpine Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church.

Born November 10, 1928, in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, he was the son of Algie Harrison and Willie Ione Robertson Rice. Pastor Rice’s formal education was received from Messick High School, Memphis State College, Brickell Institute, and the old Memphis Baptist College. He was born-again trusting the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior during the annual 1939 Spring-Summer Revival of Prescott Memorial Baptist Church, Memphis, under the preaching of Evangelist Hyman Jedidiah Appelman (1902-1983) of Kansas City Missouri, a converted Russian Orthodox Jew. At age 10 Pastor Rice was led to the Lord at home by his mother. Before retiring from the ministry, Pastor Rice pastored Old Fashion Baptist Church in Palestine Arkansas, Goodman Road Baptist Church in Horn Lake, Mississippi, in the metropolitan Memphis area (formerly Interstate Baptist Church). He was a member of Anchor Baptist Church in Columbia. He served two years in the United States Army at Fort Jackson during the Korean Conflict, where he met, courted, and married his wife of 59 years, Frances Jenny Lee Epps Rice.

Surviving are his daughter, Susan Danette (Henry Earl Fountain) of London, Ontario, Canada; son, Charles Harrison Rice, Jr. (Marjorie Denise) of Beaufort; brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Joyce Epps of Lexington, Freddie and Dottie Ford of West Columbia, Marie Hagan of Murrells Inlet, Louise and Wayne Crosby of Columbia and Barbara Epps of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Phillip Rice (Tabitha) of Greenville and Andrew Rice (Astilene) of Beaufort; great-grandchildren, Madison, Ava, Holly, and Nolan Rice of Beaufort and Weston, Alex, and Jack Rice of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances, on April 20, 2010.
