Candler – Charles Leroy West, age 80, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at Mission Memorial Campus in Asheville. A native of Haywood County, he is the son of the late Lee Roy West and Faye Rogers West. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert Mitchell West, in 1967. Charles was stationed in Taiwan while serving in the United States Army. He was employed by Clyde Savings & Loan as the Treasurer for 37 years and a member of the Central United Methodist Church of Canton. During his retirement he continued to serve the public at Proffitt's Department Store, Belk, Discount Shoes, and Country Casual all of Asheville. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruby Smith West; a son, Scott Douglas West and his wife, Samantha, of Canton; one sister, Betty Sue Bonham; a grandchild, Carter Rachel West; and two step-grandchildren, Jared Adam Sutton and James Ian Lyles Sutton. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 14, 2017 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Paul D. Brown officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. A graveside committal inurnment will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Bethel Community Cemetery with military honors conducted by the United States Army.
