Charles W. “Chuck” Filkins, 94, of Spring Hill, Florida, passed away suddenly at Oak Hill Hospital on Saturday, December 16, 2017. He was borne in Watervliet, New York on August 6, 1923 to George Henry, II, and Ella Filkins. Chuck was a proud WWII Veteran. He joined the United States Army Air corps when he was 18 years old, and was sent to ‘radar’ school; a top-secret operation, where few were chosen. He graduated from there and spent the rest of his service career in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. After an honorable discharge from the service, Chuck drove a commercial bus in Albany, New York, where he met and married Marie Elsie Kwarta. They lived in Albany, New York until 1959, when they bought the now Federally marked Wilson Farm in Selkirk, New York. Chuck and Marie, along with their children, Marie’s parents John and Maria Kwarta, Marie’s brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Vicki Kwarta and friends, rebuilt the old dilapidated farm and turned in into a beautiful home full of family, love and memories for two decades. Chuck then fulfilled his dream of actually designing and building his own home in the late 1970’s. Chuck was a life long member of Selkirk Fire Company #3. He served as an assistant chief, secretary and also served on the board of fire commissioners for the Selkirk Fire District. Chuck and Marie were both active members of the Bethlehem Volunteer ambulance service. In 1978 they moved to Spring Hill, Florida, where they have lived since. Chuck and Marie were long time members of Nativity Lutheran Church in Weekie Wachee, Florida where they sang in choir, and Chuck sang many solos for the church members. He then spent the next 35+ years, helping the church and building many of the things they needed. In the meantime, Chuck was a master carpenter and a Mason for several different companies in Tampa, Florida. He finally decided to retire when he was in his 80’s, but continued helping the church, his many friends and his family for almost a decade more. Chuck was a kind, loving and devoted family man, and when Marie was stricken with Alzheimer’s disease in 2005, he spent every moment of his time caring for her until she passed in November of 2006. They were married 60 years. Chuck then spent the rest of his days doing what he knew best; helping anyone in need, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who all fondly called him Poppa. He was liked and respected by everyone he met, and was known to converse with any Veteran that passed his way while he proudly wore his WWII cap. Chuck will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends. He is preceded in death by his devoted wife, Marie Elsie Filkins, his son, John Charles Filkins, and his son-in-law William (Van) VanNatten, Jr. He is survived by his loving children; His son, George H., II, and daughter-in-law Laurel Filkins; His son, Robert W., and daughter-in-law Cathy Filkins; His daughter, Christine F., and Son-in-law Bruce Matchin, and his daughter, Elena VanNatten. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and his close friend, Marilyn. Visitation will be 5-7pm Wednesday, January 3, 2017 followed by a service at 7pm located at Turner Funeral Home 14360 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill, Florida 34609. 352-796-9661.
