Charles W. Kaufman, 86, of Raleigh, NC, passed away on May 2, 2017.

He was born in Philadelphia, PA, on May 14, 1930, son of the late Isaac and Anna Kaufman. He is survived by his spouse, Naomi Sharpe Kaufman; daughter, Leah; son, Edward; and son, Philip; daughter-in-law, Cindi Spiegel Kaufman; and two grand-children, Ayla and Ari Kaufman.

Charles graduated from Lafayette College with a B.Sc. in Chemistry in 1952 and joined Mathiesen Chemical's Research & Development Division in Niagara Falls, NY. He met Naomi Sharpe in 1957 and married in 1958 in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada. Charles's stint with Olin Chemical began when Mathiesen merged with Olin Industries in 1959 and relocated to New Haven. The couple moved with the company and began raising their family. In 1967, Charles received his MS in Chemistry from Southern Connecticut State College. Charles played a pivotal role over the next 27 years in all aspects of Omadine research, including its production expansion to Olin's facility in Ireland. Charles retired from Olin Chemical in 1997.

In 2008, Charles and Naomi escaped the cold northern winters and relocated to Raleigh, NC to be closer to Philip, Cindi and their two grandkids.

Charles's passions included books, reading, music, telling terrible puns and photography. He almost always had a camera in his hand, focusing his lens on landscapes, flora and people. His love of current affairs, open discussion and the arts were at the heart of his love for summers spent at the Chautauqua Institute in Chautauqua, NY. The community of friends he and Naomi gathered with there made this place their true home.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30am on Friday, May 5, 2017, at Temple Beth Or, 5315 Creedmoor Rd., Raleigh NC, followed by burial at the Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery, 450 N. State Street, Raleigh, NC. Family and friends are welcome to attend both, as well as a gathering afterwards (please contact the family for address and directions).
