Dr. Cherylene Genis, 56, affectionately known as "Cheryl," was born January 7, 1961 to Jessroe and Mary "Margaret" Graham Singletary. After a brief hospital stay, Cheryl quietly slept away on March 6, 2017 to be with her Heavenly Father. Cheryl attended the public schools of Florence County, and was a 1979 graduate of South Florence High School. One year after high school, Cheryl decided to enlist in the United States Army. She shocked her family with her decision, as Cheryl had OCD. Her family did not believe that she would make it past basic training or would like being outdoors. Cheryl had a terrible fear of spiders; it was like she could literally hear them and know when one was around. Twenty years later, she retired as a SFC Ammunition Specialist with many honors, medals and commendations. She earned two Army Accommodation Medals, six Good Conduct Awards, and five Army Achievement awards. She also earned three of the following: the National Defense Service, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service, the Non-Commissioned Officer's Professional Development Ribbon with numeral, Army Service Ribbons, Overseas Service Ribbons and Marksman Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar. Cheryl earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Columbia College on May 11, 1996; her Bachelor of Science Degree from Upper Iowa University on June 30, 1996; her Master of Science Degree from Central Michigan University in August 2006; her Doctorate of Business Administration from Argosy University College of Business on January 22, 2013; and The National Society of Collegiate Scholars Award from Argosy University on April 30, 2013. Cheryl grew up in a family that loved the Lord and she carried that spirit with her wherever she went. Whatever city or state she was in, she found a church. She loved people and singing. In addition to her parents, Cheryl was preceded in death by her daughter, Denise Genis; grandparents: Henry Sr. and Lora Johnson Singletary, Freddie Sr. and Dora Harrell Graham; four brothers: Jethroe Jr., Jerome Michael Singletary; Isaac Levern Singletary; and Glenn Singletary. Cheryl leaves precious memories for: her loving husband of 30 years, Ferhat "Chico" Genis of the home; her son, Christopher Franklin of Columbia, SC; two sisters, Linda (William) McCants of Columbia, SC and Cindy Singletary of Killeen, TX; five aunts: Mary Ann McKever and Dora Weekfall of Effingham, SC; Kattie Singletary and Margaret Royal of Miami, FL; and Mattie R. Davis of Meriden, CT; uncles: Vern (Rosemary) Singletary of Effingham, SC; Clarence (Marie) Walker of Opa Locka, FL; Junior (Viena) Goodman of Miami, FL; and Calvin (Shirley) Johnson of Florence, SC; two brothers-in-law, Faik (Jasamine) Genis of Germany and Tanner (Dilek) Genis of Turkey; three sisters-in-law: Betty Seagars, Rhonda Singletary and Tracey Singletary; twelve nieces; four nephews; twelve great-nieces; five great-nephews; twenty-five awesome first cousins; and a host of other family and friends.
