Christine Hendershot (nee Joya) of Livingston passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, January 19, 2015 at the Manor Care Health Services in Mountainside. She was 66 years old.

Services will be conducted from the LaMonica Memorial Home 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston on Friday, January 23, at 10 am followed by the interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington. The Visitation is on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.

Born and raised in Newark, Chris lived in Union before moving to Livingston 41 years ago.

She attended Rutgers University where she received a BA in Sociology. Chris extended her education receiving her teaching certification from Kean University and then a Masters in Administration and Supervision from Jersey City State College.

Her career as an educator and administrator spanned over 36 years with the Newark Public Schools. She worked in various capacities from educator to vice principal throughout the many schools in Newark. Most notably, she worked at the Chancellor Avenue and Peshine Avenue Schools before retiring in 2008.

Chris had an artistic ability which she shared through her teaching of ceramics to the children of Livingston. She also taught ceramics to adults including the Adult School Education. Following her retirement from teaching, she continued to work for the City of Newark.

She was the wife of Roger Hendershot, mother of Tracy Monteiro and her husband Paul, and Darren Hendershot, daughter of Carmen (nee Pazos) and the late Joseph Joya, sister of Deborah Moustakas and her husband Tony, and Arlene LaSalvia and her husband Rick, grandmother of Kailey, Lauren, and Jordan, aunt of Joseph and wife Dana, Mathew, and Ricky LaSalvia, great aunt of Thomas and Ryan LaSalvia, and daughter in law of Katherine and the late Stanford Hendershot.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1893 Memphis, TN 38101-9950.
