Dr. Claude Jackson Sperry Jr. (Jack) passed away peacefully at Covenant Home Nursing Home at the age of 92 early in the morning of August 28th, 2017. He was born in Greenwood, South Carolina, son of Claude Jackson Sperry Sr. and Agnes Davis Sperry on August 8, 1925. He joined the Navy after two years at Clemson Military Academy for subsequent action in WWII as a code interpreter. After the war, Jack finished his graduate education at Clemson, married his lovely wife Frances Hayslip, and they had their only son, Michael Davis Sperry, born in 1951. Jack joined Tulane University as an Associate Professor of Electrical engineering having completed post graduate work at Illinois State University. Jack progressed to Full Professor and the Doctor of Engineering over a more than 40 year tenure at Tulane University. While there he helped educate hundreds of young men and women in the skills of Electrical Engineering. During that time he was also a sailboat cruiser and racing sailor in the waters of Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf of Mexico. Jack’s place in Heaven was cemented as he personally cared for his beloved wife Frances through the ordeals of Alzheimer’s disease and her final days. Jack’s parents had passed away long ago as had almost all of his close associates more recently. He is survived by his son Michael Davis Sperry Sr., his daughter in-law Linda Lowe Sperry, and his three grandsons – Jason Alexander Sperry, Michael Davis Sperry Jr. and Christopher Jackson Sperry. Jack’s family will hold a private memorial for their beloved Patriarch.
