Clifton “Cliff” Mellan, 93, of Hamilton Square, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 10, 2018, surrounded by his family. Born in Jersey City, NJ, Cliff was a Hamilton Square resident since 1953 until more recently residing with his daughter, Carol Gallo, and family in Medford, NJ for the past five years. He attended both Snyder and Dickinson High Schools in Jersey City. When the great depression hit, he took a job delivering telegrams for Western Union to help support his family. Notable telegrams he delivered were to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and to Frank Sinatra. Cliff took a job with Western Electric Corp., but soon left to serve his country in WWII. After serving, most of his life was spent in Advertising. He was employed by American Tobacco Co., Namco Corp., and was co-owner of K&M Goodwill Associates. Cliff retired from Sears Roebuck and Company after 22 years of service as a top appliance salesman. Cliff was a true American patriot. He was very proud to have served his country during WWII as a US Air Force B24 gunner. He was founder of Boy Scout Cub Pack 63 and a long-time member of Saint Mark United Methodist Church. He became an avid painter in his retirement and was proud to have sent one of his paintings to the White House. Predeceased by his parents, Emma Ross and Clifton E. Mellan, Sr; three sisters; a brother and sister-in-law; he is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Helen Elko Mellan; six children and their spouses, Kevin and Susan Mellan of Hamilton Square, NJ, Carol and Ralph Gallo of Medford, NJ, Gail and Don Jennings of Hamilton Square, NJ, Drew and Dianna Mellan of Morristown, NJ, Brian and Lisa Mellan of Rutland, MA and Nancy and Pat Lucci of Hamilton, NJ; seventeen grandchildren and their spouses, Christopher and Carmen, David and Heather, Gina and Dan, Andrew and Rachel, Jamie, Danielle, Dane, Julian, Marissa, Justin, P.J., Tyler, Lindsay, Adam, Brittany, Nicholas and Alex; two great-granddaughters, Camila and Cailyn and many nieces and nephews. Visitation for friends and family will be held on Friday, February 16, 2018, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Saul Colonial Home. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, NJ. Interment will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, North Hanover, NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mr. Mellan’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or Mobile Meals of Hamilton Twp. by visiting In Memory Of at www.inmemoryof-memorial.org.
