Connie Gunderson, 91, Casselton, ND passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 at Bethany Retirement Living, Fargo, ND.
Constance Ileen Hanson was born Oct. 8, 1922 at Aneta, ND to Benjamin and Ida (Huso) Hanson. She attended country school and graduated from Aneta High School in 1941. Connie went on to attend Wahpeton State School of Science.
She worked at the ASCS Office in Cooperstown for 3½ years before moving to CA in 1946 where she worked as a key punch operator. Connie married Gordon Gunderson on Jan. 9, 1949 at Sundahl Lutheran Church in Aneta, ND. They farmed in Romness Township near Cooperstown, ND until 1966 when they moved to Lake Park, MN to operate a farm. In 1968 they moved to Casselton, ND and began leasing the DX gas station, which they later purchased. The Casselton gas station has been called "Gordy's" for over 45 years. Gordy and Connie ran the business from 1968 to 1988 and then their sons took over the business operation. In 1987, Casselton created a Community Service Award to recognize local residents that provided outstanding service and support to the community. In 1987 Gordy and Connie were recognized and honored as the first recipients of this award.
Connie was a member of Martin's Lutheran Church of Casselton, the Sons of Norway, and Eagles. She had a passion for music and served as organist at Ottawa Lutheran Church in Aneta and Cormorant (MN) Lutheran Church. Connie also enjoyed traveling, visiting Norway and Hawaii and taking several bus tours. Through her travels, she enjoyed collecting spoons and keeping in touch with family and friends. Connie was the family matriarch and enjoyed genealogy of the family history. More than anything, family was the utmost of importance whether it be her children, grandchildren or great grandchildren.
Connie is survived by 7 children, Cleary (Colleen) Gunderson, Groveport, Ohio; Ruby (Carson) Longtine, Lake Park, MN; Elwood (Mary Lou) Gunderson, Casselton, ND; Opal (Tracy) Moen, Frazee, MN; Roger (Denise) Gunderson, Fargo, ND; Lowell (Laura) Gunderson, Inver Grove Heights, MN; and Gary (Audrey) Gunderson, Casselton, ND; 13 grandchildren, Jill (David) Gunderson Steinmetz, Troy (Jessica) Longtine, Kim (Adam) Longtine Marks, Stephanie and Ben (fiancé, Jessica Herr) Gunderson, Brent (Megan) Moen, Bryce Moen, Jaclyn (Nate) Davis, Rachel (Derrick) Bopp, Trevor and Dustin Gunderson, and Taylor and Joshua Gunderson; 8 great grandchildren, Shae and Ellie Longtine, Aidan Davis, Brody and Victoria Bopp, Grace Ann and Jeremiah Steinmetz and Brock Moen; sister-in-law, Lorraine Hanson, FL; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
