Lewiston - David J. Heikkinen, 72, of Lewiston, passed away at home on Thursday November 2, 2017. He was born in Lewiston on May 9, 1945, a son of Eva Heikkinen of South Paris, Maine and the late Eino Heikkinen. He graduated from Oxford Hills High School and attended and graduated from Kettering University in Michigan. He served his country in The United States Navy and in the reserves earning the title of Lieutenant and also earning the Defense Service Medal before being honorably discharged in 1974. He worked as a field engineer for General Motors for over 38 years. On May 31, 1997, he married the love of his life, Lorraine Perreault, in Auburn. Together they worked and lived in the Lewiston-Auburn Area. In high school he was a member of The National Honor Society, as well as receiving the prestigious science award, Bausch and Lomb, which is given to those who have accomplished academic excellence in science; and graduated Salutatorian of his graduating class of 1963. He was formerly a member of the VFW, Veterans of Foreign Wars and past president of The Prestige Wine Club of Lewiston and member of The Cobbossee Yacht Club. In his younger years he was an avid downhill skier who also loved hiking. In the more recent years, he enjoyed traveling throughout the world with his wife Lorraine. David is survived by his wife of 20 years, Lorraine Heikkinen, his mother: Eva Heikkinen of South Paris, his children: David Heikkinen and wife Jennifer of Massachusetts, Timothy Heikkinen of Massachusetts, Nicole Desjardins and husband Keith of Lewiston, Renee Marcous and fiance Derek Brooks of Buckfield, Maine. Four grandchildren: Avaya and Landon Desjardins, Jacobey and Austin Brooks, his brother Thomas Heikkinen and wife Patty and 2 nieces. He was predeceased by his father, Eino Heikkinen. Visitation will be held at The Fortin Group Funeral Home in Auburn, on Tuesday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held at the Funeral Home in Auburn on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Committal Services will follow at The Maine Veteran's Cemetery on Mount Vernon Road in Augusta.
