David Jonathan France passed away March 9, at home after a long paralyzing illness of multiple sclerosis, having fleeting symptoms beginning right after high school, plus leukemia. David was born in Corvallis July 3, 1936 to Frank and Mabel Alvord France, the youngest of 4. He graduated from Roseburg High School in 1956 & served in the US Army as a bandsman in the Presidio Band of San Francisco & the 25th Division Band in Hawaii, on alert for Vietnam. He graduated from Multnomah School of the Bible; the US Navy School of Music, Army Element; Southern Oregon College & took grad classes at the Univ. of Oregon. David met Beverly while working on his Music Ed. Degree, & playing trumpet in the SOC Orchestra, & Bev was teaching at Medford High School and singing with the Rogue Valley Choral-Airs. They met practicing together for Handel’s “Messiah.” They were married June 6, 1965 for nearly 53 years. In younger years, David often played trumpet solos in churches and TAPS at military funerals. David taught band, elementary through high school in Ashland & Newberg & also had private trumpet students. He retired disabled with MS from the Oregon State Employment Division as employment counselor 38 years ago. David is survived by wife, Bev; son, Mark of Corvallis; daughter, Joy (Doug) Byers of Albany; and sister Emilie of Salem. He was preceded in death by brothers Alvord & Jamie, & his parents. A memorial service with military honors will be held at North Albany Community Church, 1273 W Thornton Lake Dr. NW, Saturday, March 24 at 11:00am, followed by a light lunch. Private family burial was at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions in David’s memory may be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship or Navigators or Teen Challenge.
