David L. Eggers
Col. USAF ret.
March 13, 1951 - March 29, 2017
of Papillion Nebraska
David L. Eggers was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Dorothy and Leon Eggers on March 13, 1951. He spent most of his childhood and teenage years in Windsor Heights, Iowa with his sisters, Ruth Ann and Susan. There, Dave was active in band, choir, and various sports at Valley High School and graduated in 1969. He went to Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he majored in business, was a member of the Air Force ROTC and the President of Sigma Nu Fraternity. At Coe, he also met the love of his life, Debbie Harris. They married on July 6, 1974 in between "props and jets" during pilot training. Kristen and Jonnie were born while Dave and Debbie were stationed at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota. Dave flew and was the Instructor for B-52 Bombers at Ellsworth and Castle AFB. He was also the number nine pilot for the B-1 Bomber at Dyess AFB in Texas. After his move to Offutt he was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. This disease changed his life. After numerous illnesses and sepsis while stationed at Peterson AFB in Colorado, Dave pinned on Colonel and was medically retired in 1997. His gift of life was a liver transplant on April 17, 1998. The success of his surgery and everything he went through made clear his calling to help others. This led to a job at the Lied Transplant Center. Dave was so proud of his work and enjoyed meeting other transplant patients and giving them hope for a surgery as successful as his. Dave's other loves were his grandchildren, his church, and Husker football. He loved music, bicycling, playing golf and spending time with family and friends.

We wish he could have done more of these things after retiring in July 2016, but a diagnosis of a blocked hepatic artery changed that. Not only was Dave kind and compassionate, he was strong and a fighter. He took each new infection and procedure in stride and fought until the very end. Our family thanks everyone for their love and support over these last five months.

Special thanks to all the hospital staff and his dear friends at Nebraska Medicine. They fought hard beside and for Dave all these many years, especially since November 18, 2016.

Preceded in death by father Leon Eggers.
