David R. Nolan, 83, of Bloomington, IN, passed away peacefully, with his wife, daughter and son-in-law at his bedside, at the IU Health Hospice House on April 25th, 2017, after a long battle with brain cancer.
He was born on June 15, 1933 to the late Roy and Cecelia (Kelly) Nolan in Covington, KY. He married Keiko Kisanuki of Kagoshima, Japan on May 2, 1958, at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, lived in Indianapolis, IN for over 30 years, then moved to Bloomington, IN in 2000.
He served this country in both the United States Air Force and Army during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He served tours in Japan, Korea, Alaska, the Marshall Islands and the United States. He retired as an Army Sergeant Major. He went on to work as a database manager for the Department of Defense at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, IN. He again retired in 1988. He then worked as an independent consultant for companies all over the U.S., including EDS, UNISYS, Delco Remy, and Honeywell until he truly retired in 1999. He also taught computer programming courses at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis, IN.
After retirement, he enjoyed international travel, and volunteering in the community. He was the president of the St. Charles Borromeo retiree group in Bloomington, IN. He was an avid golfer, and that became his new "job". Weather permitting, he walked 9-18 holes until he was 80 years old. He was also a member of the Knight of Columbus, the American Legion and the VFW.
David is survived by his wife of 58 years, Keiko (Kisanuki) Nolan, their daughter Pamela Keiko (Nolan) Thompson and son-in-law Brent Thompson of Bloomington, IN; his siblings: Larry Nolan, Carol (Nolan) Miller, Sandy (Nolan) Meyer, Chris (Nolan) Brewer, all of Covington, KY.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Jim and Jack Nolan also of Covington, KY.
David will be remembered for his love of family and friends, and especially his quick wit. He was a kind and generous person, who could strike up a conversation with anyone. If he saw you, you'd likely get his signature smile, nod and mini-salute.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to IU Health Hospice and the Hospice House for the compassionate care they provided not only to David, but the entire family.

Funeral services will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 2222 E. Third St., Bloomington, IN, 47401 on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.
