David William Short of Madison - musician and entrepreneur, loving brother, son, uncle and friend - died unexpectedly in his sleep May 12, 2016. He was 63.

Dave was born in Canandaigua, New York, to the late Madeline and David M. Short, but lived most of his life in New York City and Madison.

After graduating from Colgate University, Dave pursued a career in music as a drummer and producer. In New York he operated his own trucking company by day so he could produce and play the music he loved at night.

He returned to Madison three years ago and recently opened the Coffee Depot, located at Tuxis Lumber, and began sharing his passion for drumming through teaching.

Dave's legacy is the deep love he felt and showed for his family and friends. He was known as "Doc," "Shorty," and "Uncle Dave" by so many and loved for his warmth, genuine caring, generosity and love of life. Everyone was always happy to see Dave.

Dave is survived by 3 sisters and their husbands, Sydney and Dave, Patty and Peter, Kelly and Steve; 7 nieces and nephews; 5 grand nieces; and many dear friends and godchildren, aunts and uncles.

The Celebration of Life will be held at the Blundon Home, 924 Summer Hill Road, Madison beginning at 2 pm. Details will be posted at Legacy.com. Donations toward a music scholarship in David's name may be made to Community Foundation for Greater New Haven at www.cfgnh.org/shortfund
