Rockwell City – Debra "Deb" J. Brennan, age 54, passed away Thursday, October 17, 2013, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home, Fort Dodge, after a courageous battle with colon cancer. A Celebration of Deb's Life will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 21, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Rockwell City, with Pastor James Hoover Mossman officiating. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
Deb is survived by her daughter Mackenzie "Kenzie" Brennan of Rockwell City; brothers, Gary (Nancy) Courter of Chariton, Kim (Amy) Courter of Rockwell City, and Dana (Cherie) Courter of Storm Lake; nieces and nephews, Stacy (Ryan) Agnitsch, Sara (Luke) Brenden, Johnathan Courter, Cynthia (Brandon) Vaske, Ryan Courter, Rebekah Courter, Ethan Courter, and Laura Logeman; and great-nieces and nephews, Kiara Agnitsch, Arianna Courter, and Andrew Agnitsch. Deb was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Beverly (Legore) Courter; her husband Michael Brennan; and sister Cathie Courter.
Debra Jean Courter was born June 15, 1959, at Lake City, Iowa. She graduated from Rockwell City High School with the Class of 1977 and attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. On November 30, 1985, she was united in marriage to Mike Brennan, and daughter Mackenzie was born to this union. The couple divorced in 2005. Deb worked as a secretary or receptionist at various businesses including Hunt Truck Lines, Northwest Office Supply, and Northwestern Mutual Life. She also worked as activities director at Sunny Knoll Care Centre, respite care at Calhoun County Dept. of Health, and receptionist at Iowa Telecom, as well as at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital until her health failed. Deb was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, serving as a past Sunday School teacher and as a member of the church council. She also served on the Rockwell City Library Foundation, EPIC Board of Directors, and Rockwell City Area Swim and Dive Team Board. Deb loved crafting, scrapbooking, and "trash to treasure decorating".
