The greatest man we ever knew ended his brave two year battle with cancer March 27, 2017 after a fantastic weekend with his loving family. We won't say he lost the battle, because he always told us a winner never quits and a quitter never wins, and HE NEVER QUIT.
Dennis was born on June 4th 1955, in Detroit MI to Richard and Patricia Holleran. He grew up in Redford Township, where he graduated from Redford Union High school. It was shortly after graduation that he met and married Shirley Dutton. Dennis and Shirley went on to have three children and move to Mason, Mi. He owned and operated Ponderosa Steakhouse in South Lansing.
Dennis was affectionately known as Mr. H to the so many he mentored as a father figure and boss at the restaurant for so many years. Although his quick temper will probably live on in infamy, he was the first one to lend a helping hand to so many, whether it was a monetary loan or a free meal for someone who just couldn't afford it. He was not just a boss, but a friend, a teacher and a leader.
To his family, he was simply Dad. The chauffeur to hockey games, the never ending bank to kids that took a while to figure out their lives, and the so very involved Papa to the grandkids, taking them on trips to the movies, the circus and up north. We always thought our dad knew everything there was to know. Whenever we had a question, Dad had an answer. He never said, "I don't know." He would say, "I'll find out." And he did.
Dad never wanted anyone to feel sorry for him or feel burdened by him. He only let on to a few people that he was sick.
He loved westerns and old movies, dogs, chocolate and Cheez-Its. He loved cooler weather and running, especially with one of his dogs. He loved baseball, U of M, and the Red Wings. He was so much more than a few paragraphs on a piece of paper. We will never be able to truly convey the epitome of Dennis, so we will finish by simply saying, "We loved him, and we always will."
He was preceded in death by his father Richard, and his grandson, Jackson. He is survived by his wife of nearly 43 years, Shirley; children, Karina (Weston) MacIntosh, Paul (Sandra) Holleran, Kevin (Erika) Holleran; grandchildren, Anthony and Isabella Holleran, Alexandra MacIntosh, Helena, Brendan and Ashton Holleran. He is also survived by his mother Patricia; sisters, Karolyn and Denise; a multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Cassie.
A memorial will be held this Saturday, April 1st at 11:00 am at St. James Catholic Parish in Mason. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, Dennis requested any donations be made in the name of Jackson Holleran, his grandson, to 335 Heart Foundation PO Box 895, Mooresville, NC 28115.
