Donald Bruce MacKay was born on June 13th, 1928 in Lynn, Massachusetts and went to be with the Lord on October 19th, 2016 peacefully while under the care of hospice at his daughter’s home in Westford, MA.

He was the son of the late Herman Bruce MacKay and Margaret (Brewster) MacKay. He grew up in Lexington, MA and graduated from Lexington High School in the class of 1947. He attended Franklin Technical Institute of Boston, played LHS hockey, and was on the Junior Olympic Semi-Pro Hockey Team. He proudly served his country as a Sargent in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He was married to Barbara McKenzie MacKay for 63 loving years and they made their home in Lexington.

Don’s career began with his family business, H.B. MacKay & Son Plumbing & Heating. He moved to Jacksonville, Florida to work for Crane Company Plumbing & Heating Wholesalers and later returned to Massachusetts to work at their Boston office. He later took over the family plumbing business and opened MacKay Hardware in Lexington, which he ran until 1989.

Don started Lexington Youth Hockey in 1964, which later became Hayden Youth Hockey. He was a member of Simon W. Robinson Masonic Lodge and Aleppo Shriners as well as being active with the Minute Man Shrine Club and was a member of the Mass Bay Winnies. He enjoyed extensive travel either in his motor home, on cruises, or spending time at Bow Lake in New Hampshire. Additionally, Don was an active member of First Baptist Church in Ruskin, FL.

He was a man of miracles, who never gave up fighting no matter how hard the battle. His life was full of devoted love, unmatched strength, and innocent trouble. We will miss him always.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara A. (McKenzie) MacKay, and is the father of Scott D. MacKay – married to Mary Anne (Rizzotto) MacKay – and Susan J. MacKay Higgins– married to Michael K. Higgins Sr. – all of Westford, MA. He is also the grandfather of Morgan (MacKay) Maguire—married to Ross Maguire—of Andover, MA; Taylor MacKay of South Boston; and Matthew MacKay Higgins of Strafford, NH.

MACKAY, Donald Bruce, age 88 of Sun City Center, FL formally of Bow Lake, Strafford, NH and Lexington. October 19th, 2016. A memorial service will be held at Journey Church on the Common, 9 Academy Street, Chelmsford, on Sunday, October 23rd, 2016 at 2:30pm.
