Donald E. Gearty, 86, of Manchester, died July 10, 2016 at the Catholic Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in Medford, MA on December 20, 1929 the son of E. Thomas and Barbara (Story) Gearty. When he was a boy his family relocated to Manchester where he was educated in the local school system and graduated from Manchester High School Central. After high school, he attended the New England Conservatory of Music.

Don proudly served in the US Navy during the Korean Crisis and played in the Navy band. After his discharge he returned to Manchester where, as a talented musician, he joined the Ted Herbert Orchestra playing the clarinet, saxophone and flute. It was as a member of the band that he met the love of his life Jean Perry who appeared as a vocalist with the band. Following in his father's footsteps, he was employed as the vice president at Manchester Knitted Fashions with more than 30 years of service. Ever the sports fan, Don enjoyed cheering for the Boston sports teams especially the Red Sox and the Bruins. He loved getting together with family and friends and will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. As he enters heaven, his family and friends wish him an endless supply of pina coladas and hamburgers with raw onions.

Members of his family include his wife of 63 years Jean T. Gearty of Manchester, his son Michael Gearty and his wife Joyce also of Manchester, his four daughters Dawn Gearty of Manchester, Robin Comiskey and her husband Edward of Bedford, Lori Merrill and her husband Andrew of Deerfield and Tracy Makris and her husband Nick of Auburn, his ten grandchildren Shaun, Courtenay, Miranda, Brian, Caitlin, Daniel, Elizabeth, Zoe, Kyle and Madison, his great-grandson Aiden and his sister Elaine Britton of Hooksett as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Patricia Dastous.

Visitation was held on Thursday July 14 from 6 to 8 pm at the McHugh Funeral Home 283 Hanover St. corner of Beech St. in Manchester. A Funeral Service was celebrated at 7 pm in the funeral home. Urn burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donation be made in Don's name to St. Jude Children's Hospital PO Box 1000 Dept. 142 Memphis, TN 38101.
