Donald E. Mirek, 84, of Wausau, died on Monday, October 10, 2016 at his home, surrounded by his daughters and granddaughters.
He was born in Wausau on December 6, 1931 to the late Edward and Bernadette (Pregont) Mirek. Don married Barbara Otto on May 6, 1961 at St. Anne's Parish in Wausau. Donald, known as Don or "Mert", to his friends, proudly served his Country in the Marines from 1952 to 1960 and was deployed in the Korean War serving as a radio telegraph operator. After being honorably discharged he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier from 1960 to 1976. He then received further training by the U.S. Postal Service's Industrial Electrical Service to become a Single Position Letter Sorter Machine Operator until his retirement in 1989.
Don was a proud member of the American Legion Montgomery Plant Post No. 10 and St. Michaels Parish since 1972. He had many hobbies in his early years including golfing, hunting, trout fishing, bowling and playing baseball and softball. His other interests included gardening and horticulture, rock collecting, astronomy, bird watching and meteorite hunting. He was also an avid coffee drinker and enjoyed a daily doughnut; he had a super sweet, sweet tooth. He had an extraordinary "green thumb" and could bring back any plant close to the brink, and his gardens were always full of beautiful flowers. He also had an amazing sense of humor.
His three daughters were always his first priority, and he was always the first person to lend a helping hand. He was also a dutiful grandfather who loved his grandchildren greatly and helped raise his two granddaughters. Grandpa's house was the only house where you could have a snack of popcorn or pickles while taking a bath. It was a yearly tradition to attend the county fair and look for his grandchildren's exhibits and watch his granddaughters show their livestock. He was always in the bleachers at any sporting event or the front row of any production or play that his grandchildren participated in. He enjoyed going to his daughter's hobby farm and feeding the horses carrots, walking through the woods with his grand-dog Rocky and curling up with his grand-cat Melvin. Above all he adored his grandchildren and was looking forward to being a great grandfather someday.
He was proceeded in in death by his wife of 32 years, Barbara; a sister, Jean Mirek; a brother, Robert Mirek; his brother-in-law and his wife, Roger and Jean Otto; and many of his lifelong friends. He is survived by his daughter, Wendy Mergendahl and her son's Nate and Nick Mergendahl, Wausau; his daughter, Lori (John) Strand and their son Christopher, Hudson; his daughter, Jennifer (Billie Jr.) Schwede and their daughters Madeline (Justin) Grueneberg and McKenzie (Lucas) Cottrell, all of Merrill; and a brother Russell (Anita) Mirek, Wausau.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Brainard Funeral Home-Wausau Chapel, 522 Adam St, Wausau. Rev. William Grevatch will officiate. A visitation will take place from 9:00 am until the time of services at the funeral Home. A Private entombment will take place at a later date at Restlawn Mermorial Park, Wausau.

Since May of 2016 he has been in the loving care of his daughter's, Wendy, Lori and Jennifer, and his granddaughter's Madeline and McKenzie. The greatest gift we could have given our loving father and grandfather was this tender care and unconditional love during this time. No one could have taken better care of him. We will always love him dearly and he will be greatly missed.
