Donald L. "Don" Gerig, 93, of Harlan, passed away on Wednesday September 3, 2014, at the Cedars, of Leo. Born on October 29, 1920, in Woodburn, he was a son of the late Simon and Minnie (Schwartz) Gerig. A member of the Church of Christ at Harlan, he was a volunteer at Parkview Hospital for 18 years and proudly served his country in the Army. Don retired from East Allen County Schools after 20 years of service as Director of Transportation, and also worked as a greeter at Hockemeyer Funeral Home (formerly Oetting Funeral Home) in Harlan for almost 70 years.
He is survived by his sons, Barry (Helen) Gerig, of Fort Wayne, Doyle (Linda) Gerig, of Holland, Mich., and Monte (Linda) Gerig, of Columbia City; sister, Ruth Bergdall, of Leo; sister-in-law, Clara Gerig, of Decatur; as well as eight grandchildren, one step-grandchild and twenty-two great-grandchildren. Don was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis G. Gerig, in 2005; brothers, Ray, Ralph, Dale, Glen and Wayne Gerig; sister, Dorothy Amstutz.
Funeral service will be 11am, Monday September 8, at Church of Christ at Harlan,17108 State Road 37, Harlan, with calling one hour prior to service, Evangelist Dave Atchley, officiating. Calling will also be held from 2 to 8 pm Sunday September 7, at Hockemeyer Funeral Home, 17629 State Road 37, Harlan. Burial will be in Harlan Memorial Cemetery, Harlan. Memorial donations may be given to Harlan Community Park, the Harlan Christian Youth Center or the Church of Christ at Harlan.
