Dora Mae Avant of Dallas, TX was called to her eternal rest on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at the age of 94. She was born in Nacogdoches, TX on October 11, 1922 to the late Jewel Polk Foley. She was raised by her Aunt and introduced to a Christian life during her early childhood. Growing under the auspice of a stern Holy Ghost Filled Aunt, Dora Accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior, she later began to sing and travel with a number of gospel groups.
Dora later met and Married the late Jimmie Matthew Avant who made history for Black Disk Jockey in Dallas opening the air waves with a gospel broadcast on radio station KNOK. One of the radio sponsors was the Wonder Bread Company, so Jimmy adamantly took on the name Wonder Bread Jimmie, Dora was known as Cupcake Dora, their son Jimmie Jr. was named Wonder Bun and Daughter Juanda was nicknamed Twinkle, keeping it all in the Wonder Bread Family. Jimmie Sr. Entered into eternal rest in 1962.
Dora was a former member of the People’s Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Dr. S.M. Wright Senior, she was a faithful member of Usher Board #3 and the Mission Chorus. She was also a member of the Inspiring Body of Christ Church under the pastorate of Dr. Rickie G. Rush, there she served faithfully as a member of the Circle of Honor. In 1999 she later transferred her membership and was one of the founding members of the Love Fellowship Family Church under the Leadership of her Son in Law, Pastor Cedric Dwayne Jackson.
Dora has made numerous contributions to the local chapter of the NAACP where she served as Finance Secretary, she also served in numerous capacities on the national level from the late 1970’s to the 1990’s, Dora was also a member of the Elk Lodge, Eastern Star for over 30 years.
Dora is survived by her two daughters, Marvin Jewel Avant, & Juanda “Twinkle” Avant-Jackson (Cedric) and Three Sons, Jimmy Ryder of California, Melvin, “M.T. Avant of Garland, TX and Jimmie Avant, of Garland, TX. Dora was blessed with 25 Grandchildren and over 35 great grandchildren, a host of relatives and friends and a very special friend Mrs. Faye Bagsby, wife of the late Radio Personality Bro. Joe Bagsby.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Avant, mother Mrs. Jewel Foley, her Daughter Mrs. Eloise Williams of Houston, TX.
