Geraldine "Gerry" Wall Blackwood, 86, of Raleigh NC, died Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Rex Hospital after a brief illness. She was Born in Johnston County, NC to Calvin and Vira Wall. She moved to Raleigh at an early age and graduated Salutatorian from Hugh Morrison HS.

She loved people--all ages, all sizes, all colors, all economic levels. She had a good sense of humor. In fact, she was a certified clown named "Curly". Every day was an adventure for her. Some of her adventures took her down the Amazon on a thatched boat, on a safari in Kenya, on a glacier in Alaska, to Machu Pichau and many other places. She has ridden camels, elephants and bicycles. She floated in the Dead Sea, fished in Lake Victoria, kissed the Blarney Stone and was spit on by a camel. She accidentally made a hole in one while playing golf with her grandson Eric. She enjoyed white water rafting, hot air ballooning, and went skydiving at the age of 77. Her favorite car was a sky blue thunderbird and her pet peeve was drivers not using turn signals.

After retiring, she took up painting. Did one for each family member and then quit. She performed with a line dance group that won two golds and a silver at state competition three years in a row.

Her first job was at First Citizens Bank and her last jobs were in the education offices of Governors Jim Martin and Jim Hunt and was subsequently awarded the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

Gerry was active member of Milner Memorial Presbyterian church, having served as a deacon, elder, teacher of every age Sunday School, youth director, and served on most all committees at one time or another. And she played in the hand bell choir.

She was happiest when surrounded by her family. She could eat her beloved children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with a spoon. How many times did they hear "I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck."

She is survived three children, daughter Faye Harris and husband Ray, Youngsville, NC, son Sherwood Blackwood and wife Lindsay, Pinehurst NC and son Steve Blackwood and wife Lisa, Rolesville NC, grandchildren, Eric Vigeant and wife, Jessica , Kathryn Smith, Will Blackwood, Olivia Blackwood, Sara Blackwood and Savana Blackwood, Tyler Colvin and fiancée, Katie. She has 4 great grandchildren.

In lieu flowers and memorials, she asked that you do a good deed for someone and to laugh, every day. Arrangements under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park, Raleigh, NC.
