Doris Grace Azzam Zarzar passed away peacefully in her home on the morning of July 25, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was born on November 18, 1937 to Costandi and Rose Haddad Azzam in Haifa, Palestine. She grew up in the family home on top of Mount Carmel, climbing trees, picking wildflowers, and sneaking peeks at dancing in a local nightclub. Her family moved to Beirut, Lebanon in 1948, and while she was a nursing student at the American University of Beirut, she met the medical student who became her husband of 52 years, Nakhleh Pacifico "Mike" Zarzar.

Doris and Mike married in New York City in 1957. They lived in Chapel Hill, North Carolina during Mike's medical residency years, and then lived several happy years in Butner, North Carolina where Mike was the Superintendent of John Umstead Hospital. In 1968 they built their family home in Raleigh, North Carolina where they raised their three sons. They had a happy life together.

Doris was a selfless wife and mother who always placed others before herself. She was devoted to her family and friends, and lived kindly and loved steadfastly. The hardest thing for Doris to leave behind in life was her family and dearest friends. She often spoke gratefully about the good life with which she had been blessed.

Doris is survived by her family which includes her three sons, Michael and his wife, Krista and their children, Katie and Christopher and his fiancé, Caitlyn; Nick and his wife, Suzy and their children, Camille, Elizabeth, and Nate and his wife, Beth; and David and his children, Allison and Laura; her beloved sisters, Hala and Katie; and dear brothers-in-law, Nayyir and Ibrahim; and many loving nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nakhleh Zarzar; and her sister, Randa Khoury. She loved her family fiercely.

A visitation will be held on Friday, July 28 from 2:00-4:00pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, Doris requested donations be made to The Foundation of Hope for Research and the Treatment of Mental Illness, 3108 Glen Royal Rd, Raleigh, NC 27617, or any charity that supports children in need.
