Doris Bethel, age 86, passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2017, in Austin.

Doris lived her entire life in South Austin, raised by Thomas and Irene Beard. She was married to Charles Gilbert Bethel on June 2, 1950. She was a long-time member of Kinney Avenue Baptist Church. She had a passion for helping others that began when she started as a kindergarten teacher at Darlington's Private Kindergarten. Continuing with her love for helping others, she founded, and acted as the director of Woodlawn Baptist Child Development Center. Doris was a successful campaign manager for Doyne Bailey as he ran for sheriff of Travis County. Under Sheriff Bailey, she started the Victim Assistance Program that is still a part of the community today. In 1990, she was awarded the Woman of the Year award in government services, honored to a woman leader in the Austin community. Doris and Gilbert spent many years at their dream house they built together, a lake front property where the Pedernales and Colorado river met. She could sew like she was making a costume, garden by the phases of the moon, and catch a fish by holding her mouth just right.

Doris was proceeded by her loving husband, Charles Gilbert Bethel. Left to honor Doris and remember her love are Doris's daughter Suzanne and her husband Tom Guedea, grandson (and light of her life) Thomas Adrian Guedea, son Garry Lynn Bethel and family, niece Charlotte Schupp Burt, nephew Ricky Duncum, and several other nieces and nephews.

A Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, on Friday, July 7, 2017, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Service to take place at 10:00 AM, on Saturday, July 8, 2017, with interment to immediately follow, both at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park.
